Internet Explorer 9 will only support H.264; Sorry Adobe

In a announcement that must was intended to up-stage Steve Jobs' open letter to Adobe, the IE9 development team has stated that their new browser will only support H.264.

If such sad news wasn't big enough, Microsoft's IE Blog team also took pot-shots at Adobe. They said "Flash does have some issues, particularly around reliability, security, and performance." Wow, who would have thought that Apple & Microsoft would be on the same side of anything. But when it comes to Microsoft its only about the money. After giving patents to HTC to make Google phones; I think anything is possible. Next up Starbucks with Steve Jobs.

For those wondering, Microsoft what is in it for Microsoft since H.264 is free to use. Well I am gland you asked. Intellectual property rights! Microsoft has a stake in H.264 and its 'freeness' will terminate in 2016. H.264 will make the Web a lot smoother for people but in the long run but Microsoft will gain a huge amount of control. What do you think about that Apple?

Dre. Dre's new single with Hov

Scott Storch's Bluewave Group issued a press release saying the heralded producer will reunite with Dr. Dre and Jay-Z on the upcoming "Detox" single "Under Pressure." There have been rumors of the single's release for weeks, since Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre announced its existence during the Major League Baseball's opening day of the season at Fenway Park. Scott Storch previously worked with Dr. Dre on Eve's "Let Me Blow Your Mind" and "Still D.R.E." I hated Let me blow your mind but loved Still DRE so I guess there is a 50/50 chance Under Pressure will be good. But you have the Hov factor so that moves it to a 80% chance. Thers are many fakes on youtube and I am yet to hear the real thing. As always you can hear more on my podcast on iTunes. iPad's A4 chips to run iPhone 4.0

Samsung scrambles to recover from the partial loss of business from Apple. According to the Korea Times, Apple will discontinue its tradition of using Samsung-designed processors with its next iPhone. The next iPhone will run a modified version of Apple’s A4 processor. The A4 is on the iPad and it runs super fast. The A4 does a great job in handling 720p playback. Samsung will be manufacturing the new Apple designed chips. Apple’s decision to keep mobile processor design in-house was just a matter of time what with the Snapdragon getting such well deserved praise over it's speed. Samsung’s bottom line will be hurt but not to the point it can't go on. It still makes the memory for the iPhone. It's not known how much faster or slower the A4 will run on the iPhone. The big thing that will get in the way is size and battery life. The iPad has great battery life for now but it does not have a radio constantly trying to connect to a tower like a iPhone would.

Humm.. Wonder why the folks at Gizmodo did not notice the A4 chip on the "iPhone" that was found in the bar?

Engadget iPhone 4.0: Fake or real?

Engadget usually a very well informed source posted photos of what was said to be an early prototype of the next generation iPhone over the weekend. Well, MacRumors confirmed that the device in question is just a Japanese knock off. Then Gizmodo checked it out and says it's real. They say it's real because it showed up in iTunes, Xcode, and System Profiler, but it has different product identifiers than the 3G or 3GS, and it's packed with Apple-labeled components inside.

Unfortunately, they couldn't get it to boot out of recovery mode because it was remotely killed thus now requires a bespoke build of the OS. It's thinner than the 3GS with a 16 percent larger battery and the same MicroSIM slot used in the iPad.

The Specs
■It measures in at a petite 4.5″ x 2.31″ x 0.37″ and weighs 140g
■The back is made of a ceramic material patent Apple holds.
■The chasis is looks like aluminum
■No way of verifying the displays resolution since it’s not possible to get past “Connect to iTunes”
■The camera has been improved and has a flash
■There is a front-facing camera
■Micro-SIM just like the iPad
■The 5.25 WHT at 3.7V battery has a larger capacity the 3GS

iRobot meet The Gift

Philips has released Carl Erik Rinsch’s futuristic action thriller
short film The Gift, which is about a robotic manservant who flees the police. The car chase is mostly CGI. You will keep thinking about The Gift long after you see it. Rinsch is Ridley Scott’s protege and also a commercial director for Scott’s company RSA.

Rinsch’s was originally tapped to direct a prequel of Alien, but Fox
convinced Ridley Scott to helm the project himself. Rinsch’s
commercials show an amazing sense of imagination, visual effects
artistry and composition. You have to check his television spots out,
you should do that after watching this short film.

The short was so good that there is a bidding war for the rights to do a feature film. Click to check out the Gift

Excerpts from Podcast 2

Saintel Almost Daily: The Podcast

This is just a little bit of the podcast that I have been doing. This week I go full HD video now that I have to kinks worked out.

Music news:
Dru Hill has gotten back together and are about to drop a new CD titled InDrupendence Day. They also have a new member Tao who won 'Dru Hill Idol' so to speak. It was 25 contestants in Baltimore, MD. I don’t think they will have the same Apple that they had when they first came out. I for one can not hear a Thong song one more time or anything like it.

Movie news:
Marvel Studios will have joss Whedon to helm "The Avengers," which assembles the Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the Incredible in one movie due out on May 4, 2012. Whedon, is The creator of series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel," "Firefly" and "Dollhouse. He recently helmed an episode of Fox's "Glee." "." Whedon has a long relationship with Marvel. He wrote for the comic book company's "Astonishing X-Men" series

Podcasting: Harder than it Looks & Sounds

Ok so I thought doing a Podcast would be as simple as recording some vocals and editing some video. I was so wrong. There is so much prep work that goes into making a podcast its a wonder that Leo Laporte or Cali Lewis can do this everyday. As so that you can avoid my some of my pitfalls I am going to go over some of the things you need. They are in order so do them in order. This will save you lots of time.

1: Buy a domain (such as rubensaintel.com)
2: Host domain with easy access to FTP (such as 1and1.com)
3: Get Sony Vegas 9.0 (if doing video podcast) and/or Sony Acid Pro (if you want just audio) But why would you want just an audio podcast forever. I recommend both. Vegas is great but can not edit audio very well so I end up using Acid for edit sound anyway.
4: Get a great mic and headphones (mixer is optional but helps)
5: Start early and prepare. You have to write a script. Having done poetry slams, live air radio jock, DJ and MC; I was under the impression I could sit down record and upload. NO! That only works if you plan to do a lot of editing (like hours)
6: Test & have trusted non bias people listen to it first before the world does.
7: Update often even if to just say hey today is going to be short. If people think your podcast is dead then they stop coming back.
7: Ping your podcast so updates show up, don't wait for Apple
8: If somehow a mistake gets uploaded fix it ASAP
9: Do this for the fun. Don't go in thinking your the next Molly Wood or Kevin Rose.
10: Be yourself & have fun

The Apple iPad Review

If you are reading this iPad review, you are probably still wondering if you should spend $499 and up when you count the cost of accessories on an iPad. Well I have the answers. I will tell you what the iPad does, how good I think is and where it just sucks.

1st impressions:
This thing is super sexy. But most things Apple makes are. There is a standard 3.5mm audio jack, the proprietary Apple connector which is very similar to the one found on the iPhone. There are a few accessories out now but just like the iPhone it will be only a matter of time before the flood gates open.

The iPad is heavier than most people expect. No I know you must have heard that by now but really this thing is like holding a big University grade 401 Chemistry book all day. It's 1.5lbs and the 3G will be about 1.6lbs less than few minutes of holding it you have no choice but to put it down.

The display deserves has a resolution of 1024x768. It's sharp, colorful, bright and has good contrast. It’s an Amazing display that works well regardless of the viewing angle.

So this thing is fast. Yes, why? Well it does not have to do much. There are no intensive actions that have to take place. All it does is run Apps and the web.

The Review:
I think that most people who believe they can give this to a non tech savvy person have never actually tested it on their tech-averse friends. I'm talking to you Penelope Suarez. Anyway, if you are thinking about getting one for a tech challenged person, just keep in mind that it won't be as easy as you think it is. 1st off a computer is still required to register and setup the device. So don't think you are going to buy the iPad as a replacement for your computer. Think of it as a friend with benefits rather than the sole mate.

iBooks is not Kindle and thus will not be used by most people since Kindle has its own app. it's not that iBooks has major issues it's just that it's not as robust as Kindle for iPad. With Amazon's Kindle it is possible to buy a book from Amazon on the iPad (on amazon.com) and bypass Apple completely. Once you own a book, you can re-download it on as many devices as you want. Kindle also lets you take notes and Amazon over 450k books vs. Apple's 60k. Do yourself a favor and skip Magazines. It's a rip off. Also while they are visually very nice, they are not quite there yet. It's buggy and often slow I love magazines and tend to spend time at Barns & Noble reading them.

Netflix is the one and only reason that motivated me the most to get this thing. Netflix works beautifully. The streaming movie resolution is not set to iPad's 1024x768 display, but still looks great.

3D games look great on the iPad and this is only the beginning. The thing that I dislike about iPad gaming is the tactile controls. That said download NOVA HD and We Rule. You can thank me later.

If you want to use a Mifi or AT&T 3G be worn network reliability remains to be proven. But AT&T has confirmed that for the iPad "unlimited" really means "unlimited" and not just 5GB. MiFi or an Overdrive works perfectly, but both devices have a battery life of about 3 hours so surf wisely.

Battery life from the Heavens is the only way to describe the longevity of the iPad.

Playing video saved on iPad: 10+ hours
Streaming video (Netflix): 10+ hours
Book reading:11-12hrs
Music (display off): Over 24 hours

The last pro: The system has already been jail broken and iPhone OS 4.0 will be out in the fall. So you will have multitasking and folders. (Sorry didn't mean to get you happy. The folders are for your apps. Not files)

The Cons

There is no camera, no USB ports, no HDMI humm wait there is more.
Display does not work in sunlight. In fact you should not take this thing out when it's hot because it overheats rather fast.

The web browsing experience is just like the iPhone/iPod touch but not at a computer.
There's no flash so many flash-heavy sites won't work properly sometimes not at all. Google docs won't let you edit documents and some Facebook widgets don't work well.

File management does not live here buddy. There is no way to manage files, which turns out is not a problem because you can't save them anyway. Apps' access to files are severely limited. You can email yourself a PDF file and open it but not save it. Photos from emails can be saved in the "photos" directory, but not elsewhere

Apple doesn't support DLNA network access out of the box, but one app that brings DLNA support to the iPad: http://plugplayer.com/. However you are limited to whatever formats the iPad player supports.

Virtual keyboard is better than a smart phone but not as fast as a Notebook keyboard or a full-sized keyboard.

Bottom Line:
If you have the money get one because you will be happy with it as long as you have a "real" computer to use in the house. If you have to save to get an iPad don't get it yet. You will have buyers remorse next year when the iPad Mini comes out. Hope that helped Penelope Suarez and Holly Ash.

He tweeted about it yesterday and has pictures of his iPad running in verbose mode to confirm it is jailbroken. In verbose mode, you see all the stuff that happens behind the scene when you reboot the iPad. Geohot also published a photo on his blog that show Blackra1n on his jailbroken iPad. Everyone including me is eagerly waiting for Geohot to release a jailbreak for iPhone OS 3.1.3 Not to be outdone iPhone Dev Team had also jailbroken the iPad using the ‘Spirit’ jailbreak. But not had Cydia on it or anything.

iPhone 4.0: Review

Email
You now have global inboxes and ability to sort emails by threads and open attachments in specific apps. It is a about time but not a must have to update.

Enterprise
iPhone OS 4.0 supports multiple Exchange accounts and now supports Exchange Server 2010. Data protection has mobile device management, wireless ad-hoc app distribution, and SSL VPN support. Muli exchange accounts is something that I was looking forward too and since no jailbreak did it right I will be using feature right away.

iBooks
iBooks on the iPhone work pretty much the same way as on the iPad and you get a free copy of Winnie the Pooh. With so many other book readers out there and Kindle app too; I don't see the hype.

Game Center
Apple now has its very own clone of Xbox Live and the Playstation PSN. Game Center offers services like: leaderboards, game achievements, and the ability to make and keep tabs on friends. Game Center will scan the network for people of a comparable ability and you’ll be able to do battle on a level playing field. This will be as big as the app store was and make ipod/ipad/iphone the number one game system in a short few years. You heard it here first.

Folders
Apple's App Store has thousands of apps and sorting them is never fun on the ipod/iphone. OS 4.0 users will be able to create folders like "Games" and drag and drop apps into those folders, simplifying the home screen. This is reason enough to upgrade.

Custom backgrounds

Now you can choose a persistent background for your iPhone and not just for the lockscreen. Big deal Jailbreakers and iPad have them.

5x digital zoom
iPhone only unless there is a new iPod Touch soon? hummm

Bluetooth keyboards
This is carryover from the iPad, Bluetooth keyboard support will come to iPhone 4. This has already been in the jailbreak world for a while now too.

iAd
Analyzes what you’re currently doing on your iPhone and suggests apps that will be the most appealing to you. Most of them lead to interactive games and videos and they’re all built on HTML5. The ad revenue will be split, 60% to the developer, 40% to Apple. Take that Google and adMob
